The Bimota Tesi 2D, launched in 2005, is a testament to innovative motorcycle design and engineering prowess. Originating from the university thesis of two mechanical engineering students in the early 1980s, the Tesi—Italian for “thesis”—revolutionises traditional motorcycle dynamics by replacing the conventional hydraulic fork with a swing arm at the front. This design not only highlights the students’ academic endeavors but also Bimota’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of motorcycle technology.
The Genesis of the Tesi 2D
The inception of the Tesi project can be traced back to the imaginative minds of these students, who dared to rethink the fundamental design of the motorcycle’s front section. Their work culminated in a concept that Bimota would later refine and evolve into what the Tesi 2D is today. It’s a limited production model, with only 25 units made, embodying Bimota’s ambition to continue innovating and refining an exceptional motorcycle.

Design and Technology
The Tesi 2D is characterised by its lightness and ease of handling, attributable to its unique frame and suspension system. The motorcycle features an omega frame with two machined plates encapsulating a robust Ducati 1000 DS engine. This setup supports the engine and the tail and seat assembly at the back, while the front is held by steering rods.

Front and Rear Swing Arms
The Tesi 2D’s front and rear swing arms are marvels of engineering. Made from an alloy box section, they are incredibly light yet strong. The arms are controlled by a double-system pneumatic shock, eliminating the need for traditional springs and further reducing the bike’s weight.
Innovative Front Section
Perhaps the most groundbreaking feature of the Tesi 2D is its front section. Using an advanced aluminium swing arm, the Tesi 2D separates the steering from the damping system. This design maintains a constant trail and steering angle, ensuring neutral behaviour from the front wheel under various conditions and delivering a more consistent braking feel. This is made possible by the Di Fazio System, which optimises the front end for unparalleled handling precision.

Engine and Performance
Powering the Tesi 2D is an air/oil-cooled, 992cc, four-stroke V-Twin engine with a compression ratio of 10.5:1. It is capable of producing exhilarating speeds with a top gear time to speed from 60-80 MPH in just 3.5 seconds. The bike’s agility is matched by its efficient fuel consumption, averaging 44 mpg with a range including a reserve of approximately 150 miles.

The Bimota Tesi 2D is not just a motorcycle; it’s a piece of modern engineering art, limited to only 25 examples. It was brought into the spotlight at the Naked Racer Moto Co Museum by Johnny Gee, who acquired it along with its siblings, the Tesi 1D and Tesi 3D, from a prominent Sydney motorcycle collector who had initially brought these machines from the USA. The Tesi 2D symbolises Bimota’s dedication to innovation and exceptional design, making it a standout exhibit for enthusiasts and technophiles.
